This is a wonderful guide to how to put glycol in your heating system. As long as you don’t really want to get a whole lot in. :) This was my first attempt to get glycol in my heating system, and I’m not sure I had a pump strong enough for the task, because I spent most of my time fighting with the system trying to get enough water out, to let the glycol in. The pump was leaking all over the place, and sounding terrible. Overall I took 30 or so gallons out of the system. near the end the water was pretty green that i was taking out. Don’t follow this video if you want a how to guide, this isn’t it. :)
I designed and built this 3 car garage by myself from foundation to siding in months see how it did it at http://mygaragebuild.com

Keeps getting better every time.

This was the third time I had rebuilt the heating system in my house, not due to lack of performance, mainly due to a Tim Taylor, Tooltime esque, “improvement / modification”. Everytime I do it, it gets better and more refined each time. This time, I a number of goals as follows.

1. Bring the tankless back into the system
2. Get a pressure gauge in the house to monitor system pressure
3. Acquire an independence for the house, from the pellet boiler
4. Acquire a back heat source incase of a shortage of fuel
5. Acquire a backup heat system in case of pellet boiler failure
6. Get a heat source in the house in case of some sort of underground pipe failure.
7. Provide and automatic heat source for being away from the property.
8. Get a secondary airvent, and an airvent at the top of the system

Those are a lot of things, but believe me they were all reasons before I tore into the system, yet another time. The process was long and tedious, mainly because I choose to re-use pipe and fittings. This is a bit interesting, I’m such a pack rat I was able to do this entire project without buying a single fitting. Sadly I don’t have any of the actual build on time lapse, but trust me it wouldn’t be worth watching. It was 8 hours or so of messing around and fiddling. Thanks for watching!

How many times can one person fix modines? … Modine for sale, great shape, never been smoked in…

The other modine developed a leak! Unreal. After one particularly cold night, I found the modine leaking directly into my toolbox. I was furious. I had spent countless hours fiddling, successfully with these “used” craigslist modine heaters, and was getting ready to not have to work on them anymore. Just not my luck. I started by taking the modine down and figuring out what was leaking, although I already knew that it was the same problem I’d had with the other one. Someone left these modines somewhere with a bit of water in the bottom, and they froze. The person they attempted to repair them, somewhat unsuccessfully. Once I got them all plumbed in, I found these leaks.
Fortuitously, I had removed one modine weeks earlier due to an abundance of heating capacity and a shortage of heating ability. That “backup” modine as it were, ended up saving me. I plumbed it in, with an air vent, and a valve this time. This lets me shut off the zone, a valuable thing to be able to do from upstairs. I found after first installing them that the heating system liked to slowly run water through this zone because it was so much smaller than the other zones. As I use zone pumps instead of zone valves (which open when a zone is on) all my zones are wide open all the time, until a zone calls, and the pump for that zone comes on. Now I can turn the valve off and nothing bleeds through the zone.
I designed and built this 3 car garage by myself from foundation to siding in months see how it did it at http://mygaragebuild.com

I went into a rant on what DIY is, and what I’m trying to do with my videos.

A little note on DIY. Do-it-yourself. Boy isn’t that a fun trend. I am one of those people that does it my self. For better or worse. That’s how I was brought up.
I hope that these videos help people think “oh i can do it”, but also, “oh, no way could i do that”
Some people comment, DIY is costly, and it’s not worth it. And sometimes, it’s not. I spend lots of time doing this stuff, I don’t exactly spend more money, as I’m usually doing DIY to save money. Don’t get caught in the trap that because I do everything myself, you should do everything yourself. People are different. Some people would go out and by a 3ft long piece of copper, instead of using 3 coupling, but I’m cheap.

A snoozer.

So the boiler for the past month has been burning a lower temperature. It’s been hovering around 100 degrees and doesn’t seem to raise. It started to get really cold, and I can’t just ignore this problem anymore. I’ve cleaned it completely and that doesn’t seem to help. I also got new pellets, but that hasn’t solved it either. So In this video I’m going to attempt to clean the bottom part of the vent.
In other news, I found out that my modine is leaking! Sigh. It’s leaking out of the case somewhere, so I have to find out where. Somewhere out the bottom, so I’ve got to tear it apart and see whats wrong with it.
I’m going to attempt to clean the boiler better this time. There are 3 thumbscrews on the fan housing that i can release and the whole fan will come out, and I can clean it out. There is also a little door on the side of the auger, to see if there are fines inside that need to be removed. I’m not convinced it’s causing a problem, but worth checking it out.
Skip to when i’m done. And i’m just not happy, it’s messy and I didn’t find anything conclusive. It didn’t seem to be the cause of the problem. And in this process i think I figured out the problem. A month ago I removed the mixing valve the regulates the temperature of the water going back to the boiler. I initially removed it so I could get a lower temperature one, but forgot all about it. Without that valve in place the boiler can get an influx of super cold water. The valve mixes incoming water with outgoing hot water to temper it up. I’m an idiot for removing it. I saw a few designs that didn’t include the valve at all, and so I underestimated it’s usefulness based on this. Bad Move. It’s since been removed.
